President Hage Geingob has urged banks operating in Namibia to rededicate themselves to transforming the lives of all Namibians.

The Head of State made the call during the groundbreaking for the construction of Standard Bank Namibia's new head office in Windhoek's Kleine Kuppe area on Thursday.

In a speech read on his behalf, Geingob said the banking sector should play a more prominent role in improving the lives of disadvantaged Namibians who live in poverty.

Quoting American economist Professor Joseph Stiglitz, he said “Development is about transforming the lives of the people, not just transforming economies.

“These people face unemployment and lack access to decent shelter,” said Geingob.

The president commended the bank for improving the communities it operates in through corporate social investment initiatives.

The bank's head office will be constructed in two phases at a cost of N$650 million, with the first phase to be completed in 2019. The completion date for the second phase will be announced in due course.
