Standard Bank offers junior hockey a lifeline

The dreams of many young boys and girls who aspire to become hockey professionals were given a much-needed boost after Standard Bank Namibia yesterday announced a N$500 000-per-year sponsorship of the School of Excellence Hockey Club and Academy.
The initiative, which will span over three years, is aimed at training teachers and young players how to play hockey.
The Standard Bank junior hockey programme is expected to assist the government and the Namibia Hockey Union (NHU) to introduce the sport to all 14 regions and to reach 2 080 learners from 104 schools, and is set to develop 208 coaches and 92 umpires over the next three years.
The NHU and government expect 26 towns to benefit from the project after three years.
“Today, we are witnessing a beautiful story that demonstrates that with partnership, we can achieve better, we can develop legends.
“Thank you, Standard Bank Namibia, for the investment we as a nation are cherishing today.
“We appreciate companies like Standard Bank who accepted the responsibility to augment Government’s efforts and provide for our young men and women by investing in sport,” deputy sports minister Emma Kantema-Gaomas said.
Remain professional
She urged the School of Excellence to ensure that they remain professional and that funds and operations follow the initial plan at all times.
Standard Bank Namibia CEO Mercia Geises reiterated the bank’s support towards Namibian hockey.
She promised to make the dreams of many of the young boys and girls come true by making sure the bank is involved in initiatives that contribute towards development.
NHU president Reagon Graig vowed to move with the programme as it enters different regions.
He also lauded Standard Bank Namibia for the sponsorship, saying it will change the lives of many athletes around the country.
