Some advice from NUST students on exams

Dorcas Mhungu

Your palms are slightly sweaty as you engage in anxious conversation that is only making you more nervous.
You’ve never understood why you and your classmates discuss the subject material just before the exam, but nevertheless you mentally store little nuggets of information that you think may help once you are in. God forbid those nuggets are all you remember.
Yep it’s exam time again, a season of rigorous testing that we periodically experience twice every year until the day you get to put on that gown and walk across the stage with the Vice-Chancellor’s blessing, and for hundreds of Namibia University of Science and Technology students at least, the extra burden of having to figure out how to settle their debts before they can write has been removed.
Methods of study and coping with the pressure differ from student to student. Through a campus survey here are some tips NUST students would give to fellow classmates: There’s no need to be nervous if you are prepared, so start studying at least two weeks in advance. Focus on the scope and stick to a study routine. Find a time that works best for you; some prefer to study in the dead of the night, while others prefer early morning sessions. A number of students expressed their appreciation for group study sessions, “Studying in a group helps a lot. Your classmates can sometimes explain things in a way that you will remember better,” says one female student as she takes a break by the yellow benches. However, others have found that it is better to attend a group study already thoroughly prepared. One student who thinks group studies can be a waste of time is Fransciscus Immanuel, a third year in Communication studies says “I’ve tried going to group study sessions and its never worked for me. You get there and you end up talking stories. You leave knowing more about something else rather than the subject material.” And still for others, a little prayer as you leaf through the proverbial mountain you have to conquer never hurts.
