Salute, PK join hands
At the launch of 'The Kavango River Fray' boxing tournament, Salute Boxing Academy also signed an agreement with PK Boxing and Fitness Academy.
Kavango East governor Samuel Mbambo has welcomed an MTC Salute Boxing Academy boxing tournament to the region, which is scheduled to take place on 30 March in Rundu.
The boxing tourney, titled 'The Kavango River Fray', will be headlined by Jonas Matheus, who will defend his International Boxing Organisation (IBO) bantamweight international title against Nasibu Ramadhan from Tanzania.
Mbambo during a media conference last week expressed his profound gratitude towards the MTC Salute Boxing Academy for having decided to host their tournament at the riverside town.
“We are so excited about the fact that the MTC Salute Boxing Academy came up with the idea of saying that this sport, which is a well-known, must be decentralised and brought to the people,” Mbambo said.
“We are really excited to accommodate you here and I and the other leadership of this region say that this will not be your own; you will not go it alone in organising this boxing tournament, as we will definitely do our part, including making our people aware of the importance of the event.”
Mbambo said that apart from bringing boxing closer to the people, the event has the potential to attract tourism to the region, as local and foreign visitors will attend the tournament, and become aware of where Rundu is situated.
He said they are likely to return at a later stage. Meanwhile, the MTC Salute Boxing Academy made a number of announcements, which included the boxing card and the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with PK Boxing and Fitness Academy.
According to MTC Salute Boxing Academy's general manager Armas Shivute, 11 boxing matches will take place prior to the main bout between Matheus and Ramadhan. Matheus boosts a record of 15 fights, 10 wins, two draws and three losses, while Ramadhan has a record of 40 fights, 22 wins, two draws and 12 defeats.
Shivute said Lazarus Shaningwa and David Shinuna will be fighting for the super welterweight national title.
Salute decided to enter into a 10-year partnership with Rundu-based PK Boxing and Fitness Academy.
The MoU entails that Salute will assist PK with the necessary equipment in order for the academy to groom its boxers to develop from amateurs to professionals.
PK's boxers will thus be exposed to various boxing tournaments across the country.
“The MTC Salute Boxing Academy will have a responsibility to assist PK Academy boxers with professional fights for them to improve their professional rankings and will support the Rundu-based stable with gym equipment,” Shivute said.
Kashera expressed his gratefulness, saying he will make great use of the opportunity.
