NAMPA/ANA - Defending champions South Africa will be looking to do even better than their 31 medal haul last time out, when they take part in the Region 5 Confederation of University and College Sports Association (CUCSA) Games in Gaborone, Botswana from June 18 to 22.
Two years back in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Team SA collected 16 gold, seven silver and eight bronze medals, and this time a 127-member squad will be in action.
The team from the Rainbow Nation will be a part of the action along with hosts Botswana, Angola, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Malawi, Namibia, Mozambique and Zambia.
The sports codes holding the medals include athletics, basketball, football, table tennis and volleyball, with rugby making its debut at the tertiary event. Hosts Botswana will join Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia in the challenge to contest the rugby gold medal.
Ten countries will compete in the multi-sport competition. Besides rugby, a host of other sports codes will also be on the programme including football, badminton, netball and softball, which will also be on debut at the event.
The CUCSA Games programme will also include 100 and 200m athletics races for people with special needs or disabilities.
