Athletes from all works of life are gearing up to participate in the annual Rössing national marathon championship, slated for 8 February.
The event will include a 5km fun walk, while longer distance runners can gear up for the very popular 21km run known as the Frank Slabbert half-marathon.
Athletes in top form can also participate in the 42km full race, one of the most popular events on the Namibian athletics circuit.
The first prize for the marathon is N$10 000 for the men and women categories.
The runners-up in each category will receive N$5 000, while those who finish third walk away with N$2 000.
Athletes who finish fourth will be compensated with N$1 000 for their efforts, with N$500 reserved for the runner in fifth.
A cash bonus of N$1 000 is up for grabs for the athlete who beats the current marathon best of 2:11:23, set by Luketz Swartbooi in 1992.
The first prize for the half-marathon winner is N$3 000 in both the men and women open categories.
The marathon and half-marathon start at 07:00, while the 10km run and 10km uranium relay events start at 07:30.
“The fun walk is in support of the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) for the fight against cancer,” Rössing's media relations officer Kaino Nghitongo said.
The fun walk starts at 09:00 at the Pro-Ed Academy sports fields in Swakopmund, following a scenic route through the streets of Ocean View.
Walkers stand a chance to win prizes in various categories, such as best themed/most original costume, funniest hat, youngest walker (excluding toddlers in prams and pets), oldest walker, tallest walker and the cutest pet walker.
Entries for the fun walk can be submitted at the venue on Friday, 7 February from 18:00 to 20:00 and on Saturday from 08:00. Registration is N$10 per walker.
Entry forms for the full and half marathon are available at rossing.com. Registration closes on Wednesday, 5 February.
