Reviving Khomas darts
The Khomas Darts executive has embarked on a journey to promote the sport at school level.
Mario Kavandje and Jonathan Doeseb of the Khomas Darts organisation said the sport needs a breath of fresh air and new players in the region.
The sport is currently experiencing a low number of participants.
Kavandje and Doeseb are however confident that it can grow if more grassroots development programmes are introduced.
“To be honest, the growth of darts has been very minimal because we do not have players.
“There have been times where we are forced to bring people out of retirement because the interest from young people has not been there,” Kavandje said.
The organisation plans to improve darts in the region by scouting players in schools.
“Our plan is to create more awareness about the sport by going to schools and getting youngsters to follow the sport.
“We want to start engaging youngsters by grooming them in order to for us to have more players for the sport,” he noted.
The Khomas Darts league has been operating for over 25 years and is currently host to six clubs.
The league does not get any funding from corporate Namibia and therefore source funds from the registered clubs.
The Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) only funds the national darts association. Treasurer Doeseb pleaded with corporate Namibia to join them by sponsoring the sport.
“It has been very challenging for us to keep things running because we do not have any sponsors.
“I would like to invite corporate Namibia to come on board and sponsor the Khomas Dart organisation.
“Darts is a very big sport and the Khomas Region has provided the national darts team with players over the years,” Doeseb reiterated.
The Khomas Darts organisation managed to host a successful league season, involving four leagues, during 2019.
The four leagues are comprised of a 17-point league, 16-point league, 11-point league and a 7-point league.
CPG won the 17-point league by 15 points, while City of Windhoek won the 16-point league with 28 points during the 2019 season.
The 11-point league was won by City of Windhoek with 18 points, while Shooters won the 7-point league with 24 points.
Last year, the City of Windhoek's darts team was crowned the champion of darts at the Namibian Local Authorities Sports and Recreation Association (Nalasra) games in Walvis Bay.
The team also won the Southern Africa Inter-Municipal Sports Association (Saimsa) games, which were held in Zambia last year.
“The Saimsa Games involve local authorities from southern African countries, while the Nalasra Games involve teams from different local authorities in Namibia,” Doeseb explained.
Khomas Darts further invites corporate teams to join the league.
