Porn is the root of gender violence

Sirefwe Ernest writes: How long can I wait, how far will this go, what are the consequences and how worried are you for the next generation? I am tired, I am heartbroken, I am worried and I'm sure I'm not alone. Namibia where are you driving us to? You hear of girls getting raped, killed, violated and losing their jobs because of refusing to have sex. Have you meditated on this? Or are you just reading about it and throw away your newspaper because it does not concern you? Well, some are having sleepless nights but some are comfortable with it. For me, having meditated on what pornography has brought different nations to, I guarantee that Namibia has no shield against what is happening to other countries concerning pornography. The newspapers are full of reports on rape cases and one of the most shocking was from Syria. It was reported that Syria has recorded 600 000 people at a refugee camp who fled their homes because women were getting raped, killed, tortured and kidnapped by armed men in public and in the presence of their family members. The United Nations went to investigate and concluded that the camp would be crowded by 1,1 million people by June. You hear this in many countries. I have come to the conclusion that nothing will stop Namibia from reaching this stage. I am thinking of the kind of life my daughters, cousins etc shall live if we keep on ignoring this. I have one problem which I want to raise. MTC's happy hour programme (I do not know what they call it but those who use it know). This programme works from midnight to 06:00 if you register for it. I am not against it but I am concerned that it is contributing to the passion killings. The hours are alone hours, this time is too risky to be sitting alone on your computer. Research has proven that people (men specifically) are likely to start viewing porn when they are alone. Please MTC, we plead with you to change that because when your head is obsessed with naked pictures, believe me not, the chances of wanting to see real images is 99,9% high. Internet has proven to be a good thing for people but poisonous at the same time. I want us to look at that because from my research, I have found out that an estimated 80% teenage cellphones have pornographic material, be it music, images and videos. My last suggestion is to have a national holiday camp for teenagers. We want the ministry of youth to sponsor such a camp where teens can be taught how to avoid bad habits. If it works in other countries, why not here? Or have we given up already for our women to be violated like this? Please Namibia, I have more to say but this is just a glimpse concerning my sisters who are killed every day.
