Police divers search for drowning victims

Police divers are searching for the bodies of four girls - aged 13, 15, 16 and 17 - who drowned in the Orange River on Sunday.

According to the chief police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi, the victims had reportedly gone swimming with the father of one of the girls.

In another incident, a baby girl burnt to death this weekend in a hut that caught fire in the Onayena area.

According to the police, the incident happened at Uuyoka village on Saturday at about 08:00. The baby, Asteria Johannes, was left with a five-year-old boy by her mother. It is alleged that her mother and grandmother went to fetch water at the time of the incident. The boy escaped unharmed.

In another incident on Friday at Oshikango, a woman died after she went into labour at the Engela state hospital.

It is alleged that a doctor injected Ndapewoshali Daniel and her condition worsened. The police are investigating the matter. In another incident, a 20-year-old woman was threatened and gang-raped by four men in Windhoek's Otjomuise residential area early Sunday morning.



According to the police the woman was threatened with a knife by four unknown men.



The woman was apparently knocking on the door of a house when the suspects grabbed her, dragged her to a riverbed and raped her. None of the suspects has been arrested.



A 56-year-old man has been arrested for the rape of a nine-year-old girl in the Spitzkoppe area.



According to the police the girl was raped at the farm Rooidak last Tuesday night. The suspect, a cattle herder, was arrested at the weekend.



In Wanaheda, a security guard shot and wounded a 24-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman on Friday night.



According to the police the incident occurred at about 20:00 at the Uukwamamatsi Bar in Havana.



The employee of Shilimela Security Services opened fire in self-defence after a group of unruly revellers attacked him.



The guard had tried to get a group of arguing patrons to leave the bar, but they allegedly turned violent and kicked him.



The guard fired shots, injuring two people. He has been arrested.



In another incident at Okondjatu on Sunday, a 33-year-old man was stabbed to death with a knife.



It is alleged that Mike Hauta was stabbed in his left shoulder by another man who has been arrested.



On Friday at about 11:30, a 48-year-old woman was arrested at Usakos for being in possession of one kilogram of dagga. She was searched and arrested at a service station.



In another incident on Saturday at about 00:55, a fire erupted in the nurses' dressing room at the Oshakati state hospital's intensive care unit.



Damage was caused to the ceiling and other parts of the building but no casualties were reported. The cost of the damage has not yet been determined and the cause of the fire is unknown.
