A 63-year-old man burned to death on Monday night when the room in which he was sleeping caught fire at Okamwandi KaMadhinga village in the Onesi constituency of the Omusati Region.
Police Deputy Commissioner Moses Simaho said Shipili Simon Shikongo’s bedroom caught fire at around 22:30.
It is suspected that the fire might have been caused by a cigarette because Shikongo was a smoker.
“It is suspected that the fire caught at the curtain and went up to the timber that made the roof of the building and when the deceased woke up crying for assistance the whole room was already on fire,” Simaho said.
Shikongo’s son will have to live with the torment of not having been able to rescue his father, who burnt beyond recognition.
“The deceased’s son, who lived in the same house, came to render assistance but to no avail. The room was completely on fire," Simaho said.
