Parents urged to take ownership of NSSU

Managing member of Namibia Premier League (NPL) outfit Tura Magic, Isack Hamata, has called on parents to take ownership of the Namibia Schools Sport Union (NSSU).

Hamata said this recently during the second award ceremony of the Khomas School Sport Region (KSSR) that was held in Windhoek to honour athletes for their hard work during the 2018 school sport season.

He said parents should take charge of the NSSU, if they want their children to be actively involved in sport in the country.

“We need to reform school sports and that can only be done by parents and teachers who are actively involved with these kids through their sporting activities, as well as education, on a daily basis,” he said.

Hamata added it is not enough to only have the Confederation of Southern African School Sports Associations (Cosassa) games and think athletes are actively involved in sports.

“The Cosassa ball games alone are not enough. Teachers and parents must think of ways to reform the NSSU and have more athletes actively involved in sport throughout the year,” Hamata said.

He said if parents take ownership of the NSSU, local sport will grow and parents would know what their children are doing in sport and school.

“We are supposed to have a lot of regional competitions, but before those regional competitions, every region is supposed to have a number of competitions amongst the different schools. If schools compete amongst themselves, young athletes will be actively involved in sports, which in turn will help them academically.”

Hamata said with a lack of parental involvement in the NSSU, the amount of youth participating in sport is reduced, because they lack support.

“Many young people will, as a result, end up getting involved in activities that do not contribute positively to their lives or the country.”
