Oshakati water defaulters called to the table

OSHAKATI MERJA IILEKA The Oshakati Town Council has called on residents who have been defaulting on their water bills to come forward and discuss ways to sort out the problem amicably. The appeal comes after the council realised that a large number of residents, mainly from the township, have had their water connections cut, while others owed thousands of dollars in unpaid water bills. Oshakati Town Council spokesperson Jackson Muma told Namibian Sun that as of May 1, residents are invited to the town council to make suggestions on the way forward. According to Muma, defaulters have burned a hole in the town council's coffers, making it near impossible for the town council to fulfill all its obligations. People need to come forward and pay their bills so that council is also able to efficiently and effectively provide services to the community, said Muma. Muma further added that the town council was not opposed to re-connecting the water of those affected, as long as an agreeable payment method was discussed. Water is a basic commodity and we do not want people in town to be without water. That is why we are calling on residents to come to us so that we can discuss how best we will resolve this matter, said Muma.
