A comedy show not to be missed
Dorcas Mhungu
Tjil chats to Courage the comedian about his one man show and his future.

Who is Courage the Comedian?

Courage the comedian is presumably the funniest guy in the Namibian comedy industry. Having entered the comedy scene in 2011 by mistake, he then won last comic standing that same year two months into joining. He also became the male comic of the year in 2014 after he did his first one man show with free your mind titled the University of Comedy. Courage has done over 80 shows in the past six years and has performed alongside decorated comics like Loyiso Gola, Carl Joshua Ncube Anne Kansiime and Chris Mapane. He has also been one of the very few comics to take Namibian comedy across the border having performed in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Why a career in comedy?

I love comedy because it promotes social interaction, it brings good energy and hey, believe it or not laughter is the best medicine. I chose this career because I have had a rather not so great childhood. I lost my mother at the age three, went to boarding school where I was a nobody and in the beginning was subject to bullying then the economic situation that hit Zimbabwe. All these factors pushed me to see the good in every situation. I looked for a way to address the issues and I found the answer in stand-up comedy.

What is the Zimbabwean show?

Firstly it’s titled Nambabwean as a result of the love I have for both Namibia and Zimbabwe. I’m a product of two great countries and I love that so much that I’m even asking the president of Namibia to consider me as the advocate for the 5th pillar of the Harambee prosperity plan. It’s going to be a one man show because I believe it’s time to take Namibian comedy internationally. I have had six years to prepare for this so I’m ready now and most importantly this is my final semester at varsity so as soon as I’m done I’m going full time into comedy. I’ll need a good CV and this is. The show is going to happen at the National Theatre of Namibia on 18 November and tickets will be N$150.

Why make a DVD?

It’s time for the world to get a dose of Namibian comedy. I want to use the profits to join the movement of uplifting the girl child in Africa. I am aware of the campaign of donating sanitary pads to girls in school because pads should be free for school kids and grown man must not feel shy to buy pads or tampons for their girlfriends and spouses right. They must have "courage". Thus I’m thinking of having a line of sanitary pads and tampons and panty liners called ‘COURAGE’ and have it in a way that you buy one pack in a shop one automatically gets donated to schools. My idea is crazy right?
