Ondangwa an industrial hub for the north
The chief executive officer of the Ondangwa town council, Ismael Namgongo, says the town’s strategic plan is to become an industrial town by 2030. With only 13 years to go, the town has already started attracting potential investors.
This is part of the council’s 2016-2021 strategic plan which is aimed at making Ondangwa the engine of industrialisation and sustainable development in the north-central regions.
The town is also trying to create a supportive environment to ensure sustained industrial growth and to provide more jobs.
Namgongo says the council has earmarked land surrounding the airport, railway station and main road for these industrial developments to enable investors to transport their products and materials easily.
He says they would like to take advantage of these road, rail and air links that other towns lack to advance their developmental agenda.
The council has budgeted about N$52 million to service these industrial erven. To date, 124 industrial erven have been created at Extension 8 and numerous others at Extension 21, 5, 12 and portion 55.
“All these erven are already allocated to interested investors who either have set up their industrial units already or are still in consultation with the council. For those that are serious and interested, they can still approach the council, we are ready to extend services there,” Namgongo says.
The governor of the Oshana Region, Clemens Kashuupulwa, is pleased with the industrial development plans, saying that Ondangwa is strategically located and can enable investors to reach out to their targeted customers.
“Ondangwa town is strategically located at the centre of commercial activities in relation to Ohangwena, Omusati and Oshikoto regions. In this regard, I congratulate the Ondangwa town council for having developed the necessary bulk urban services infrastructure and allocating the land for this industrial development activity of Ondangwa Fuel Depot,” said Kashuupulwa.
In April this year Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila visited factories in Ondangwa’s industrial area. She visited Roama Gates Manufacturing, Country Roofing, Henning Crusher, Tumandje Burial Coffins Manufacturing, J&P Meat Processing and Blue Pointers Namibia.
The prime minister said she was pleased to see that Ondangwa had attracted Namibian investors manufacturing goods of high quality, which was an ambition advocated for in Vision 2030, the fifth National Development Plan and the Harambee Prosperity Plan.
Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said this economic growth trajectory could only be achieved if manufacturers produced goods meeting international standards in order to establish a reliable market, both nationally and internationally.
