Okalongo set for village status upgrade
The Omusati regional council has announced that the Okalongo settlement will this year be proclaimed a village.
Regional council chairperson Modestus Amutse announced this on Friday. The settlement has made headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent years, with residents and visitors alike complaining about its filthy conditions.
“I am happy to inform you and the nation at large that we have managed to do this within our limited resources. We have been busy and we have high level engagements scheduled for it to be proclaimed as village council this year,” Amutse said.
“I would like to call up on our business community to be serious when they are given projects in our settlements and towns. We still have problems with project execution by private contractors and this is what taking us back sometimes.”
Approached for comment, Okalongo-Based Development Community Body chairperson Vilho Nhoni said they simply want development to take place at Okalongo.
The group has in the past complained to the regional council about alleged corruption, especially when it comes to land allocation at the settlement.
