Namibia Premier Football League (NPFL) director Mabos Vries has explained their decision to call a meeting while waiting for Fifa’s directive, stating that it is just a move to set themselves in motion for the 2022/23 season.
Vries said this after Namibian Sun obtained a memo inviting members to a meeting next week, which was sent out to this week.
The invitation comes in the wake of a visit by a Fifa and Caf delegation which met local football stakeholders in an attempt to understand and resolve the infighting in Namibian football.
Vries believes that the meeting will give them direction as to how the season will be and when it can start while waiting for Fifa’s decision.
“I can confirm that the invitation is legitimate and that it was sent out to members. This is, however, just a consultative meeting to give us a direction in terms of what we want to do and achieve this year.
“We are aware that Fifa still needs to come back to us but we can’t just sit and do nothing while we wait for them,” Vries said.
Some of the agenda points are Fifa and Caf updates to the members, as well as the 2021 transitional league which ended prematurely.
The members are expected to discuss league modalities and formats.
The agenda indicates that they aim to start the season in March.
The members are also set to deliberate on a league prosecutor and as well as seeking clarity on the alleged admission of Unam FC.
“We only require a maximum of two members per organisation or club to be present at the meeting,” Vries said.
The Namibia Football Association’s (NFA) ordinary congress in December 2020 adopted constitutional changes to incorporate the Namibia Football Premier League (NPFL).
The new league replaced the MTC Namibia Premier League, which was expelled from the association’s structures after a lengthy standoff between the association and league officials.
The NFPL commenced with a transitional league last year but did not complete the season due to coronavirus and funding challenges.
