Not Namibian enough?

Many are not impressed with Miss Namibia 2019's national costume.

On Wednesday the Miss Namibia organisation unveiled the national costume that 2019 queen Nadja Breytenbach will showcase at the Miss Universe pageant.

According to the Miss Namibia organisation the national costume celebrates and embraces the extreme beauty and incredible diversity of Namibia.

“The side detail of the garment is inspired by the Ovaherero tribe. The headpiece reflects the formidable and unique collection of Africa's wildlife, both domestic and the roaming wild heritage of the 'Big Five',” the organisation said.

The costume was designed by South Africa's Mzukisi Mbane.

Many took to social media to express their feelings on the costume. This is what people said on Facebook and Twitter:

Is it a cow? Is it a Mexican mariachi member? No. Apparently it's another Miss Namibia that won't make it far in Miss Universe this year! So upset by this National costume!

Ndapewoshali Shapwanale

I just want @MissNamibia and Connie to explain the Namibianess of this costume please. I'll deal with the head piece later.

Caroline Dunaisiki

Why must a South African design our National Costume? My word we are hooked elsewhere! We have great designers here!

Pascalina Lina

The costume is really beautiful, however it is not suitable to be a National Costume. I strongly agree that they should get a Namibian designer that can do it. There are so many talented Namibian designers.

I think it is brilliant! The TOP Miss Universe National Costumes are always very bright, vibrant and 'different.' Namibia's will definitely stand out – GO NADJA!

Lizzelle Opperman

The Herero ancestors are turning in their grave. What a shame. Why could she not just wear an original Herero dress. How does this inspire the Herero Tribe?
