New training facility for City Police

The City Police will have their own training facility by the year 2015, set to accommodate about 120 trainees. City Police Chief Abraham Kanime said last week that they are planning to turn the City Police Crime Prevention Management Unit into a training facility for their members. This unit is located in Thompson Street in Windhoek North. “Criminals always change their tactics, so we need refresher courses to keep our members updated with the tactics used by criminals. Technological advances are some of the issues we want to concentrate on more,” he indicated. Kanime said there is a need for such training facility, especially for specialised training on issues such as traffic control, patrols, financial administration and technological advances as the City Police currently do not have such a training facility. He pointed out that the City Police currently receive basic training from the Namibian police after an agreement was signed to that effect between the two parties earlier. Kanime further stated that the City Police have secured funds in their 2013 annual budget for architectural work, while they will budget for renovations to the Thompson Street premises next year. N$500 000 was set aside for the facility this year, while N$1 million will be availed in next year’s budget. “This will actually not be a training facility for City Police alone. We want to train local authorities on matters such as traffic control, and we can train Nampol members too if there is a need for it,” he enthused.
