Netball teams out of patience

Jesse Jackson KauraisaTeams in the MTC Namibia Netball Premier League have raised concern over payments and the league’s format going into the next season. Sources claim that clubs are frustrated because the Namibia Netball Federation has been delaying addressing the problems, even with the netball season set to start on 19 February. Namibian Sun is in possession of a letter signed by 11 of the 12 teams in the premier league. Eleven Arrows, Navy Netball Club, Afro Cat Lions, Otjozondjupa Nampol, Rebels Netball Club, Blue Waters Netball Club, Namibia Correctional Services, Northern Fly Ballers Club, Mighty Gunners, Grootfontein and Young Stars Netball Club are among those that have signed the letter. The clubs asked for an increase in their monthly grants in order to pay their players. It is believed that larger grants would be a big step towards professionalising the league. “The federation is playing delaying tactics and not addressing the matter ahead of the much-anticipated kickoff,” the source said. President of the Netball Federation Lydia Mutenda however assured this newspaper that they have not dragged their feet on the request but are still deliberating. “We still have to deliberate on these issues and we will get back to them once we have had discussions. “As to the increment issue, it is only the sponsor who can decide on that. “We must also be careful of demanding too much at this time because it has just been two years now since MTC came on board,” Mutenda said. Among other things, the clubs requested the establishment of clear transfer guidelines and a period during which a player may transfer to another team. A review of player contract, with the clubs to have clear clearance and release conditions, was another suggestion. “We request that all teams from the same region be allowed to play each other in their respective region as a derby (home and away). “This will build interest for the local players, reduce travel costs and create a very competitive platform,” a letter written to the federation reads.
