NBF to host coaches training in March
The course will comprise theoretical and practical sessions, and participants will receive certificates at the end of the training.
The Namibia Boxing Federation (NBF) plans to host a two-week training programme with the help of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) in Windhoek from 13 to 24 March 2018.
The course will focus on developing coaches from all 14 regional federations in Namibia, while administrators and referees are also likely to benefit, if funds permit.
Speaking exclusively to Nampa on Thursday, NBF President Benjamin Rabang said the course will be funded by AIBA, the body responsible for amateur boxing.
“The first part of the coaches' course is called the 'grass-up' programme because it deals with development at grassroots level. This course will be conducted by an international instructor over four days,” he said.
After this course there will be a mini tournament by a few junior amateur boxers to assess the participants.
Rabang added that preparations for the tournament are progressing well, with the venue secured.
“We applied for funding from the International Olympic Organisation through the Namibia National Olympic Committee and we are confident we will be successful,” the president added.
The NNOC applies for funding through the IOC, who in turn apply to AIBA on the NBF's behalf.
Rabang explained that by holding this course, the NBF is aiming to empower Namibian boxers, coaches, referees and administrators in order for the country to continue producing world champions and potential Olympic champions.
“AIBA is concerned with safety in boxing, especially in the amateur ranks, hence everyone around these boxers must understand the sport,” he added.
Participants must belong to a club registered with a regional federation, which in turn should be affiliated and be in good standing with the NBF.
Rabang added that they held similar courses before.
He said professional coaches cannot participate in this course despite the fact that many clubs and gyms mix amateurs and professionals during their training.
