Namibia wins Drag War
A beautiful sunny day, fast cars and a jam-packed crowd made for a roaring time in Okahandja. Speed and Sound, partnered with Team RMC and brought 16 fast cars from South Africa to compete against some of our local super powers.
It was however Dewaal Theunissen in his Toyota Levin that sent shockwaves through the hyped crowd when he broke the national drag record three times. The best of the three runs was a blistering 10.46 seconds.
Theunissen was the only Namibian racer to breach 11 seconds on the quarter mile drag. Coming very close was Kallen Amurugam from South Africa in his madly tuned Opel Kadett Superboss. Marginally slower was Wessel Amurugam with his twin turbo V8 Toyota Lexus-powered Corolla. Amurugam had the crowd eating out of his hands as he warmed up his tyres before every race.
One of the highlights of the day was a race that had two cars calculated to a value of N$8 million go head to head, twice! Following weeks of social media teasers Quinton van Rooyen Jr pitched up with his McLaren 650S and was the second fastest Namibian on the day. Van Rooyen was challenged by team Dynamic’s Nissan Gtr, a company owned by a ‘Wheels’ local Morne Wagner “Pora” who was previously featured for buying the Honda Civic Type R.
Right of the blocks the Gtr was faster because of its all-wheel-drive system but the McLaren caught up close to the 300m mark. Surprisingly the Gtr won the first race with a time of 11.172 seconds, driven by Ruaan Viviers. But he was soon put to bed when they raced again. Van Rooyen put on a time of 11.057 seconds which settled the rivalry then and there.
Further down the timeline was Jason Hine who drove all the way from Cape Town to come and show the Namibian crowd what the entire Facebook buzz has been about. Hine had been making waves amongst the Honda society in Namibia and South Africa with his Honda Ballade. He surely put on a remarkable performance, beating Honda dc5s and others out of his class.
It truly was an exceptional day and only time will tell when another one will follow.
