Namibia to host global youth festival
Namibia will host the 18th World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) under the theme ‘Youth Unite Against Imperialism for the World of Peace, Solidarity and Social Transformation’.
The festival will run from May 11 to 17.
It will address land challenges and xenophobia, among other issues. During the festival’s official launch yesterday, the chairperson of the national preparatory committee, Edward Kafita, said about 500 youth leaders from across the world are expected to attend the event.
Namibia was represented by more than 200 young people, led by Minister of Youth and Sport Jerry Ekandjo, at the 17th festival held in Quito, Ecuador, in 2013.
According to Kafita, the Namibian event will be hosted by the Ministry of Youth and Sport and will be financed by the National Youth Council.
Visiting countries will take care of their own travel costs.
“It is a movement that creates an opportunity for the youth of Namibia and of African descent worldwide to draw lessons from our founding father of the Namibian nation Sam Nujoma’s illustrious life of heroic sacrifice and public service,” said Kafita.
