Namibia gears up for Netball World Youth Cup qualifiers

Staff Reporter
Netball Namibia has selected a provisional under-21 national squad to prepare for the upcoming 2021 Netball World Youth Cup qualifiers.

The 2021 Netball World Youth Cup will take place in Fiji between 10 and 19 June and is the pinnacle of netball competition for emerging players.

The event, which has been held every four years since 1988, was founded as part of the Australian Bicentenary Celebrations with a youth tournament taking place in Canberra. The success of the competition led to the tournament being named the 'Netball World Youth Championships' and in 2017, it was changed to 'Netball World Youth Cup'.

The cup has been held in four International Netball Federation (INF) regions (Americas, Africa, Europe, Oceania) with the most recent event taking place in Gaborone, Botswana, in 2017.

This was the first time the INF has held an international event on the African continent. Australia and New Zealand are the only teams to win the championship title, with both countries winning four gold medals throughout the tournament's history.

The Namibian side is hoping to qualify for the competition, and will play an international friendly against Botswana en route, from which a team of 12 players will be selected from the provisional squad.

According to a statement by the NN, this exercise is necessitated by the under-21 world cup qualifiers.

The provisional squad consists of: Tharine Bergh, Annette Steyn, Zante Farmer, Monica Gomases, Shawna Pieterse, Charlene Shaanika, Roché van Wyk, Lea Hugo, Ngumekujoria Humajava, Uendjisuvera Kangumine, Chantel Louw, Aina Samuel, Mbahimua Kakuenje , Urikombanda Katjatenja, Tilie Kamati, Corry Mupenda, Berné Nel, Zaanri Labuschagne, Coré Michau, Ashiya Otto, Mianka Robberts, Rachelle Roetz, Halle Pack and Tjeripo Kambirongo.
