Namibia celebrates International Day of the Girl Child
Celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child in Namibia, Girl Up Namibia and She Mentorship organisation hosted a commemorative event at the Namibia University of Science and Technology on Saturday.
A group of 20 girls were selected and brought together to enjoy a few activities including watching the recently Netflix-aired local movie Baxu and the Giants as it based on a young girl who aims to make a difference in her community at the age of nine.
"This year, the global theme of Girls Day is ‘My Voice, Our Equal Future’, a reminder to listen to girls, understand the changes they want to see and to ensure that all of them have an equal opportunity for a bright, safe and healthy future. We held this event with the hope of instilling courage and determination in them to be able to change the world with their voices and minds.
“Despite all the social ills and inequality happening towards the girl child, they still deserve to enjoy their day," said Girl Up Namibia regional leader June Shimuoshili.
The event concluded with the girls writing letters to themselves with goals for the year with stationery from Namibia Housing Enterprise and Multichoice as well as receiving two boxes of sanitary pads from the One Economy Foundation Break Free from Violence.
