NAMAs cut 11 categories for 2018

The Namibia Annual Music Awards (NAMAs) launches 2018 with a few changes in the structure.

The NAMA committee announced that due to weak interest in the Friday evening awards, the NAMAs 2018 will only be hosting one main award event on Saturday 28 April. With this change, 11 categories were cut from the usual 35 leaving only 24 categories open for entry. The cut categories include Kizomba, Shambo, Radio Song of the Year, NAMA Special Award, Best Live Performance, Best Musical Event, Entertainment Journalist of the Year, Radio DJ of the Year, Most Disciplined Artists of the Year, Song with a Message and Most Socially Responsible Artist of the Year. “This is an experiment that we are trying out and it is not a permanent decision. We cannot fit all 35 categories into one night, hence the decision. This does not mean artists should not be responsible or disciplined. The Kizomba and Shambo categories have been removed due to low entries from the public,” said Tim Ekandjo.

The 24 categories which are open for entries are: Afrikaans, Damara Punch, Oviritje, Soukous/Kwasa, Afro Pop, Gospel, Kwaito, R&B, Rap/Hip Hop, House, Reggae, Traditional, Collaboration, Single, Newcomer, Music Video, Song of the Year, pan-African Artist, Best Album, Best Male and Female, Best Group, Producer and Lifetime Achiever.

The Best Producer of the Year category will now be included within the 'NAMA 2018 entry categories', where previously this category was a non-entry category and the vetting committee vetted producers based on the albums nominated purely from the 'Best Album of the Year' category. “So this year, producers must enter in this category to be considered for nominations as 'Best Producer of the Year,” said the newly announced NAMAs executive chairperson Umbi Karuaihe-Upi.

The call for entries to all Namibian artists that have released music from 1 December 2016 to 30 November 2017 is to submit their applications as of today until 1 December 2017. Applicants are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the rules and regulations before applying. Different town councils and municipalities are also encouraged to submit their bids to host the country's premier music event.
