The office of the United Nations in Namibia, along with the health ministry, was in attendance at a memorial service held for the late Global Fund employee Sarah Mwilima at the Katutura State Hospital in Windhoek on Friday.

According to the mourners, the life of a selfless heroine was celebrated while her senseless killing was mourned.

Rachel Odede, the acting resident coordinator of the UN in Namibia, spoke of Mwilima's contribution to social upliftment and development in the country. She spoke of Mwilima's long career with the UN, working for the upliftment of women.

“Economic inequalities between men and women make women more vulnerable to HIV,” Odede said, quoting Mwilima.

“Today we bid farewell to an iconic woman who leaves a gaping hole in the fight against HIV. She lived every moment of her life to the fullest but our time with her has come to an end. She lived her life to its end and did her part. It is now up to us to take her work forward,” she said.

Mwilima will be buried at Katima Mulilo tomorrow.

Simataa Simasiku (33), accused of shooting Mwilima in her office in the city centre last Monday, briefly appeared before the Windhoek Magistrate's Court on Wednesday last week. He was denied bail and the matter was postponed to 19 March.
