The 'Sinking Sea Robbers' article published in Namibian Sun on 27 February rubbed someru up the wrong way, including former coach of Orlando Pirates Erich Muinjo, who took time off to clarify his involvement in the faltering club.

The giants of local football are at the bottom of the Namibia Premier League log, which has irked diehard supporters and resulted in finger pointing as to who is responsible for the club's failure.

In the article a source stated that players were fired from the club because management did not side with them when it came to various complaints regarding the way issues were approached at the club.

Muinjo interpreted the article as having fingered him in firing the players, which he is adamant he had nothing to do with.

He said he always sided with the players and was against them being expelled from the club.

“I wanted the players back but it was not up to me, but to management. We knew how disastrous the decision would be, but it happened.

“So the problem did not start with me. I inherited a problem when I accepted the job at Pirates.

“When I took the job, they were on the brink of relegation. I steered them to ninth position in only seven games.

“I didn't fire players like everyone else thinks. It was the decision of management,” he emphasised.

Also, Muinjo is unhappy with being called an outdated coach even though he was inactive for years before being given the job at Pirates.

“I helped them secure a position in the ongoing Standard Bank Top 8 Cup,” he pointed out.

Young African, who were initially supposed to take the position, were relegated, hence Pirates taking the spot.

Soon after, they were defeated 5-0 by African Stars in the quarterfinals of the same competition.

“I do understand that people are worried about the club, including myself as I'm a former player for 18 years. But please, it is of utmost importance that whoever reports on the club be informed correctly,” he added.

Muinjo stated that he is now retired from football.
