Mining employees compete in sports tournament

NAMPA
Over 700 employees of different mining companies across the country gathered at Otjiwarongo on Friday to take part in a sports tournament organised by Otjikoto B2Gold Mine Namibia at the Paresis Sports Stadium.

B2Gold Mine's public relations coordinator, Monika Shipanga, told Nampa in an interview at the event the games, which officially kicked off Friday morning, would end on Sunday with the announcement of the winning teams.

She further said even though the winners in each sports code will receive trophies, medals and cash at the end of the event, the real purpose of hosting the tournament is to promote a healthy culture amongst mining employees in Namibia.

“We want to see a healthy workforce at each mine in this country so that productivity can improve,” she said.

Shipanga further noted that the games will also increase interaction among the participating employees.

The participants are amongst others from De Beers Marine, Ohorongo Cement, Nafas Water Technologies, Namdia, Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation, Swakop Uranium, Cheetah Cement, Rössing Uranium, Namdeb, Skorpion Zinc, Tschudi, Dundee and the host, B2Gold.

The teams are competing in football, rugby, netball, volleyball, tug of war, darts and pool.
