Meroro's Nigeria showdown postponed
Vikapita 'Beast Master' Meroro's fight slated for this weekend in Nigeria has been postponed until next month.
The former Pan-African interim cruiserweight champion was scheduled to clash with Nigerian boxer Tony Salam for the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Pan-African cruiserweight title in Lagos on 30 June.
The fight has, however, been postponed to 21 July because of the ongoing Afcon 2019 finals taking place in Egypt.
Manager Risto Ashikoto, trainer Andreas Moyanale and Vikapita Meroro had been booked to fly to Nigeria today.
The trio will now, however, fly on 18 July to Nigeria.
Ashikoto confirmed the fight had been postponed.
“It is sad that we have to announce that the fight will not take place this month as scheduled. It is unfortunate that the organisers of the festival and the boxing fight that was to take place in Lagos will all be at Afcon.
“The fight is not off but it has just been given another date,” Ashikoto said.
Meroro has a record of 27 wins and seven losses in 36 professional fights, while Salam will go into the fight with an impressive record of 13 wins and only two losses in 15 fights. Meroro last fought in November last year, when he beat Mussa Ajibu via unanimous decision, while his opponent's last fight ended in a knockout victory over Kwesi Tutu in December 2018.
“Meanwhile, the team will remain working hard in the gym and preparing for the fight.
“The good thing about this is that we have more time, even if the boxer is a bit upset about the whole thing,” Ashikoto added.
He pleaded with Namibians to continue supporting Meroro, saying he still needs his fans ahead of the fight. He added they still believe Meroro will return to Namibia with the title.
