Mboma and Ronaldo are immortals

The weekend produced incredible performances and results from the sporting world’s top stars.

The name of Namibian sprint queen Christine Mboma has echoed across the globe, and many now are aware that ‘Katiku’ has arrived and appears to be unstoppable.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku’s Serie A rivalry has been brought to the English Premier League, with both players scoring two goals each for their respective clubs.

Mboma is a Diamond queen

Starting off on Thursday, Mboma’s scintillating form continued after she won the Wanda Diamond League 200 m final race in Zurich Switzerland in a junior world record time of 21.78 seconds. She pipped one of Jamaica’s favourite, Shericka Jackson, at the finish line. Jackson clocked 21.81, while Dina Asher-Smith finished third, clocking 22.19. See reactions on Page 3.

Khomas, MTC Netball produce thrills

The Khomas First division, second division and the Super 10 saw various rivals outplaying each other in Windhoek and Rehoboth over the weekend. The Super 10 league saw Wanderers S2 beating Afrocat Lions 37 to 33 at Wanderers, while Rehoboth beat Tigers 28-21 in the second division at the Dr Lemmer field. Afrocat S2 were victorious against Black Afrocat with a scoreline of 37-35. The MTC Namibia Netball Premier League saw Mighty Gunners thrashing Golden Girls 61-26, while the Namibian Navy defeated Eleven Arrows 60-36. See reactions and story on Page 3.

Okovimburu take Kasu Dream Cup

Local football was the centre of attention, with Okovimburu reigning supreme after a 3-1 victory over Herero Mall. The tournament was played at the Moses van der Byl Primary School sport field. See reactions on page 3.

Ronaldo back with a bang

Manchester United fans saw the return of their prodigal son marked with a brace in a match pundits described as a “script written in heaven”. Two goals from Ronaldo and one each from Bruno Fernandes and Jesse Lingard gave United a 4-1 victory over Newcastle. Meanwhile, Lukaku also scored twice in Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa. Arsenal got their first win of the season following their 1-0 victory over Norwich City. Tottenham Hotspurs suffered their first defeat of the season as Crystal Palace scored three without a reply from Spurs. See full results and reactions on Page 4.

USA gets better of Canada

USA’s Hanco Germishuys managed to score three tries, helping his side beat Canada 38-16 in a 2023 Rugby World Cup qualifying tie.

Queen leads explosion of British joy

Just 18, Emma Raducanu beat 19-year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez 6-4 6-3 to become Britain's first women's Grand Slam singles champion since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon in 1977, and the first player to win a major after coming through a qualifying tournament. See reactions on Page 4.
