This year’s third NTA senior tournament was held last weekend, with matches played at the NTA tennis courts in Olympia and the police tennis courts.
In the singles competition a record number of 60 players registered to compete in the men’s A, B and C sections, whereas the women played in an A and B section accommodating different levels of playing abilities.
The men’s A section consisted mainly of top Namibian players who are competing for a slot in the forthcoming Davis Cup competition in Madagascar.
The top-ranked player in this section, which was played in a round-robin format, was Davis Cup stalwart Deon van Dyk.
In the Sunday final Van Dyk played Minichel Alemu, whom he had previously beaten on several occasions.
However, on this day the versatile game of Alemu proved a tough challenge for the Davis Cup player. Alemu eventually won 6-2,4-6, 7-4.
“This is my biggest win this year,” an exhausted but proud Alemu commented.
The doubles matches were played on Saturday.
The final saw Alemu and SP van Wyk defeating Dantago Gawanab and Tevin Tait 6-2, 6-2.
In the women’s A section veteran player Amanda van Dyk thrashed Jessica Riedel 6-1, 6-1.
In the men’s B section final Jurgen Twyman outsmarted Marsorry Ickua 6-1, 6-2.
The men’s doubles in the B section were won by Peter Brinkmann and Armid Azadeh who prevailed over Lawrence Kahindi and Hilary Tafara 6-3, 6-4.
The women’s B section saw Joyce Stalls pitted against 11-year-old Hendrina Apollus. The experienced veteran took the first set 6-2 but the youngster stroke back in style and won the second set 6-3. In the third set Joyce Stalls overcame the stiff resistance by the junior and clinched a 6-4 victory.
Megan Lombardt and Bronwyn Kavure won the women’s B section doubles while Albertus Brinkmann won the men’s C section singles title.
Shivangulula and Gospel Mwilima won the men’s C section doubles with Tji Tji Mbetjiha claiming honours in the women’s C section singles.
The next NTA Senior Open Tournament will take place in Windhoek from 29-30 July.
