Landless People's Movement (LPM) Keetmanshoop Urban Constituency councillor Maxie Minnaar was laid to rest at Keetmanshoop on Saturday.

Minnaar died on 10 August at a Windhoek hospital after a short illness. She was 47.

In her last tribute to the late Minnaar, //Karas governor Aletha Frederick described Minnaar as a political leader who left a great legacy in both her private and public domain.

“I have known her as a very humble and friendly person, with an extraordinary level of commitment in her political career. She was remarkably brave to follow through her convictions and had a genuine concern to address the challenges by our people in contemporary Namibia,” she said.

The governor, who also spoke on behalf of President Hage Geingob, said the vacuum left by Minnaar's death was devastating, adding that not only her family had suffered an overwhelming loss but the community of Keetmanshoop had lost a youthful, tested leader. “She had great aspirations for improving the living conditions of the citizens of Keetmanshoop Urban constituency,” said Frederick, who served with Minnaar in the Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL).

Speaking on behalf of the family, Johannes Swartbooi said the family would remember the late Minnaar as a people's person who accommodated everyone, regardless of their political affiliation. She will be remembered as an influential lady and someone who had an outstanding personality.

Minnaar took over the councillor position from Hilma Nicanor of the Swapo Party, who had served in the position since 2004. Nicanor resigned to stand in the National Assembly election and Minnaar emerged victorious during the Keetmanshoop Urban Constituency by-election held in January this year.

She was serving in the post at the time of her death.

Minnaar worked at the //Karas Regional Council before joining the LPM after being a Swapo Party member and becoming LPM's first councillor.

She was also the leader of LPM's women's command element and member of the political action committee.

Minnaar is survived by her parents and a son.
