Lobster exports caught in corona net
The outbreak of Covid-19 has led to a halt in rock lobster exports from Namibia to Asian markets.
According to Jossy Kalaza, a local businessman as well as the chairperson of the Namibia Rock Lobster Association (NRLA), about 70 tons of lobster is laying in their cold rooms.
“We only work in the lobster industry for about four to five months a year and we have to generate income to sustain us for the rest of the year and in such times like these it's very difficult. We need to face what is going to happen. I see a very tough time for all of us in the fishing industry in this country,” he said on Sunday.
He said the lobster industry had a prosperous season but he is afraid many people might lose their jobs in the absence of the export market. “We don't know when we will be able to sell this lobster and that makes it a very complicated issue for us. Income is zero at this stage, all the expenses have been done for this season,” he said.– Nampa/Xinhua
