To some it is regarded as a hobby and others - like the older folk - don't view it as a serious occupation, compared to science or medicine. Is it possible to say that venturing into this world of performance is foolish and a suicide mission? Certainly not! Yes, Namibia is still trying to make its mark, but the arts - largely the performing arts - are as a huge investment opportunity as any other field. The fact that it is a growing industry means there are more opportunities to be successful in it. But here is where the problem lies. Not everyone is cut out to be a performer. If you aren't programmed like those lollipops with the chewy centre, its best to develop a thick skin - and fast. You are exposed to hardcore criticism, and believe me we Namibians have a PhD in criticism. The stage is where you strip yourself and become vulnerable and oblivious to yourself. You become someone else for a few minutes. You need to develop the ability to take yourself in and out of character. So how then can one crack it in the industry? Here are a few tips I learnt along the way. Audition As an aspiring performer, it's our duty to live, breathe and fart auditions. As any performer does, make sure you are at as many auditions as possible. Whether it is for a role in a play, an extra in a short film or to do some voice overs for a company. Make sure you arrive on time. Be comfortable and always wear blue. Once you get casted it is a job like any other. Never arrive 15 minutes or later for a rehearsal. Be flexible and willing to follow directions. Avoid being a diva. Keep the issues at home! Humility Always be humble and work hard at what you are given. Never try to gain the whole world and lose your soul. You have nothing to prove to anyone except yourself. Use your craft and passion to the best to your ability and always seek direction. After all, a diamond doesn't get it shapes and shined on its own.
