Kutara takes best gross
Edwin Kutara of Windhoek was the best gross champion of the 2020 Windhoek Lager Central Open, which took place last weekend at the Windhoek Country Club.
Kutara won the open with a 216 score, while Kevin Wentzel from Walvis Bay was the best gross runner-up with 219.
Helmut Ndjendja secured the best-nett with a score of 206 and Jonathan Mather of Walvis Bay took the second best-nett spot with 211.
The A division at the open was won by Grant Mather of Walvis Bay, who scored 220 points.
Zillan du Pisani of Omeya scored 221 to take the second place, while Charlie Lohmann scored 214 to take the best-nett.
The nett runner-up was Walter Heibeb of Tsumeb, who scored 216.
Walvis Bay's Willem Els dominated the best gross position in the B division scoring 244, while Jonas Katti came in second with 247 points.
Meriki Shoozi of Omeya managed the best nett in the B division with 216 points, with Windhoek's Toady Gurirab taking second best nett with 217.
The C division also produced thrilling results as Sacharias Goabab of Rossmund scored 173 to win the best gross, followed by Paul Grobler who scored 176.
JP Johnson from Tsumeb made his presence felt, scoring 126 to win the best nett in the C division, while Alois Nyandoro took the second spot with 139.
Gavin van Wyk of the Windhoek Golf and Country Club (WGCC) lauded all who helped with the arrangements and those who placed at the competition.
Van Wyk said: “The 2020 Windhoek Lager Central Open was welcomed by absolutely stunning conditions with the course in an excellent but tough condition.”
A and B divisions played 54 holes over two days (36 and 18), whereas the C division only played 36 holes, 18 per day.
In total, 58 players participated, which was also an increase from 2019's 49.
The central open saw 17 participants in the A division, while 19 took part in the B division. The C division hosted 22 players.
Ian Stevenson of Namibia Breweries, the sponsors of the tournament, congratulated the WGCC management and golf committees for the excellent course conditions, however announcing that Windhoek Lager would no longer be sponsoring the Africa championship.
“The focus in golf sponsorship has shifted to the international pairs, which is drawing huge numbers of players,” Stevenson said.
The WGCC will host the second instalment of the Windhoek Larger Medley Series this weekend at the country club.
