Khomas wins national schools’ athletics in Swakop
The Khomas Region won the 2016 Namibia Schools Sport Union (NSSU) national athletics championships over the weekend.
The two-day track-and-field event saw over 800 athletes in the under-13, U/15, U/17 and U/19 age groups from all 14 regions of the country compete.
Khomas won 96 medals – 32 gold, 26 silver and 38 bronze.
The host region finished second with 36 medals - 15 gold, 12 silver and nine bronze.
Otjozondjupa came third, also with 36 medals - 12 gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze. Hardap ended fourth with 38 medals - 10 gold, 15 silver and 13 bronze.
Ohangwena took fifth position with 23 medals - nine gold, six silver and eight bronze.
Omaheke was sixth with 12 medals - six gold, four silver and two bronze.
Seventh position was occupied by Kunene with 10 medals - five gold, four silver and one bronze.
Kavango West was eighth with 11 medals - five gold, two silvers and four bronze. Oshikoto came ninth with 22 medals - four gold, 12 silver and six bronze. //Karas completed the top 10 positions with eight medals - three gold and five silver.
Omusati managed to get two medals - one gold and one bronze, while Kavango East finished 12th with four medals - two silver and two bronze.
Oshana came 13th with four medals - two silver and two bronze, while Zambezi only won one bronze medal.
Khomas also dominated the list of best-performing athletes.
In the U/13 category, Jandia van Wyk from Khomas and Toivo Hauwanga from Hardap won awards as best athletes, while Raymond Hummel from Erongo and Nathalie Louw (Khomas) were crowned the best athletes in the U/15 age group.
The U/17 achievers were Henryke Garbers and Warren Lugwig (both from Khomas), while the U/19 category saw Katja Veitor and Timon Dresselhauss (also from Khomas Region) crowned as best achievers.
NSSU National Coordinator Solly Duiker told Nampa on Saturday he was pleased with the outcome of the event.
Out of the 120 athletes selected for national teams, 70 athletes from the U/13 and U/17 age categories, including selected U/15 athletes, will represent Namibia at the Confederation of School Sport Associations of Southern Africa (Cossasa) Athletics Games in Swakopmund from 10 to 15 May.
