Kavango East prioritises basic services

KENYA KAMBOWERUNDUThe Kavango East Regional Council vows to bring an end to the challenges experienced by the inhabitants as they prioritise providing potable water, proper roads and access to electricity.Kavango East regional council management committee chairperson Damian Maghambayi told Namibian Sun that the newly elected regional councillors are focused on ensuring that basic services are taken closer to the populace.For years Namibian Sun has been exposing the harsh conditions inhabitants, especially those in the inland areas, are faced with. Water woes One of these is a lack of potable water. People have to travel close to 10 kilometres to either the river or the nearest borehole to fetch water.Residents of Nyondo village in Ndonga Linena Constituency rely on contaminated water from wells dug in the floodplains, as the river is kilometres away. Budget Maghambayi says while they wait for their budget allocation from the line ministry later this month, the priorities have already been decided.“We have prioritised water, roads and electricity for the people. Our people need access to these services and we are going to ensure that their needs are taken care of,” Maghambayi said.“The budget for the regional council will be out shortly as it was presented in parliament and hopefully by next week we will know how much we have.”Besides the funding from central government, Maghambayi said the dividends they receive from electricity distributor Nored will be used to either buy transformers in identified villages or the drilling of boreholes.Kavango East remains one of the poorest regions in the country and it has a high youth unemployment rate.kenya@nambiansun.com
