‘Kapana’, one of the Ombetja Yehinga Organisation’s films, won Best Feature Film at the DC Black Film Festival (DCBFF) in Washington DC, USA.
The DCBFF is dedicated to showcasing quality film, webseries and television content by and/or about people of African descent. It supports emerging artists striving to add diversity to the images and storytellers working in the entertainment industry. The DCBFF is committed to playing an integral role in discovering, celebrating and helping films and filmmakers by bringing them to the attention of the industry, media and public.
The festival ran online from 18 to 22 August, with the awards ceremony starting at 23:00 (Namibian time) on 22 August.
‘Kapana’ is the first Namibian queer film. Produced and directed by Philippe Talavera, it is first and foremost a love story. Written by award-winner Senga Brockenhoff and Mikiros Garoes, the film stars Adriano Visagie (best actor Southern Africa, Sotigui Awards 2019) and Simon Hanga. With a supporting cast including Mikiros Garoes (winner best newcomer Namibian Theatre and Film Awards 2019), Dawie Engelbrecht (winner best male actor Namibian Theatre and Film Awards 2014), veteran actresses Felicity Philander and Elize de Wee, Foreversun Haiduwah (The Third Will), Albertina Hainane (The Third Will) and newcomer Chanwrill Vries.
While it is not the first award the film has won, what is significant this time explains Talavera, is that the DCBFF is a mainstream festival. “'Kapana' has done extremely well in the LGBTQI+ film festival circuit, but it is amazing that an LGBTQI+ story won the main prize in a mainstream festival. It is a great honour, seeing that the festival had an amazing line up,” Talavera said .
