While former light-welterweight champion Julius 'Blue Machine' Indongo hasn't seen the inside of a ring since 2018, the fighter has been training under Willie Lowe in the United States since February.

Before the coronavirus pandemic sport shutdown, Indongo was scheduled to face undefeated welterweight prospect Daniyar Yeleussinov. The 28-year-old Yeleussinov, who won gold at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and the 37-year-old Indongo, were meant to fight on the undercard of Regis Prograis and Maurice Hooker's fight, in what could be an enticing bout. “The plan to fight is still on,” the Namibian said.

In Good company

He has been keeping busy, working on his technique, strength and conditioning, while staying safe at the New Era Boxing Gym in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, he said. American heavyweight Deontay Wilder trains at the same gym.

“We are working hard just in case the boxing commission allows us to fight without spectators. “So the moment things change, Michael Carter, Immanuel Moses and Lou DiBella will announce to the pubic when I'm stepping in the ring,” Indongo added.

Looking back

In his last fight, Indongo emerged from a 15-month layoff to defeat Carltavius Jones Johnson via a second-round knockout. The Namibian lost two of his last three fights in knockout defeats to Terence Crawford and Prograis. Crawford stopped Indongo in the third round in August 2017.

Prograis, however, had an easier time, stopping Indongo via a second-round knockout in March 2018.

Indongo was knocked down several times in the fight, before the bout was halted.

Moving forward

Indongo has some punching power that could give Yeleussinov problems, if he's able to land his big shots.

But it's not easy to hit the evasive Kazakhstan-born fighter. When Yeleussinov opens up on offence, Indongo can catch him. However, when the fight will take place remains to be seen.
