Jacobs, Tigers smoke peace pipe
Tigers FC have confirmed that the dust has settled between the NPL side and their coach, who remains in charge.
MTC Namibia Premier League (NPL) outfit Tigers Football Club and their coach Woody Jacobs have agreed to work together in the upcoming 2018/19 season.
This is after reports surfaced that the Tigers coach was unhappy with the latest developments at the club.
The coach had previously claimed he was left out of meetings and that his future at the club was uncertain.
This led to further speculation that the club was hunting former African Stars coach Bobby Samaria as a replacement for Jacobs.
Tigers' spokesperson Hafeni Hiveluah, however, dismissed the rumours.
“Woody is still our coach and will remain our coach for the new season. The problem was that he wanted to know everything that was happening and that is why he probably felt left out when he heard about indoor meetings.
“These meetings did not require him to be there, but I do believe everything is fine now,” Hiveluah said.
He further warned people about spreading wrong information about the club, in a bid to compromise its operations.
Hiveluah says there are people spying on the team and disseminating false information, which is causing harm as they prepare for the start of the new season, slated for next month.
“The club has a WhatsApp group and I am sure that some people are just there to spy and disseminate false information. If anyone is found spreading things from the group, we are going to deal with them accordingly.”
Tigers also announced the appointment of form footballer Mervin Mbakera as their new assistant coach.
Mbakera replaces Oubaas Mokwena, who decided to leave the club after he was relieved of his duties as assistant coach.
“I also want to clarify that Oubaas Mokwena was not chased away from the club, as some newspapers sensationally claimed.
“We told him that he was relieved of his duties as assistant coach and will be given another post to occupy at the club.
“I do believe he was not happy with that and that is why he probably decided to leave the club,” Hiveluah said.
Tigers lost 12 matches during the 2017/18 premier league season, while winning 14 games and drawing four of their 30 encounters.
They faced a major crisis in the first half of the season, which saw them lingering near the bottom of the table for a number of weekends.
This resulted in the resignation of coach Lucky Kakuva, who was under pressure from management.
As a result, the club appointed Jacobs in December last year.
He managed to help the team out of the relegation zone, leading them to a sixth-place finish.
