Woody Jacobs is the new interim head coach of the Brave Gladiators of Namibia, it was announced yesterday in Windhoek.

No stranger to Namibian football, Jacobs brings a host of skills and about 19 years of experience to the team, which is currently preparing for the Cosafa Championship, slated for Nelson Mandela Bay towards the end of this month.

He will be deputised by Uerikondjera Kasaona, a former Gladiator who was the team’s coach from 2019 until Jacobs’ appointment.

The outspoken Jacobs coached the University of Namibia (Unam) Football Club, the under-17 and under-23 national team and also had a stint with the senior men’s team, the Brave Warriors, which he quit last September, citing a strained relationship with the current interim head coach Bobby Samaria and the Namibia Football Association (NFA).

Before leaving the top job, he voiced frustration about the NFA’S leaders regarding unpaid wages as well as the appointment process for a technical director post, which he had applied for. He said he was snubbed before the appointment process began, despite having the relevant expertise.

However, he has buried all of that and said his attention is on the Gladiators.

New chapter

“I have put everything behind me. I don’t want to talk about that chapter, but rather to focus on the team and the competition ahead.

“I’m glad that I can get another shot at the national team. I'm a passionate Namibian football enthusiast and coach and I will jump at any opportunity when it arises,” Jacobs said.

He added that he is looking forward to working with the women’s team as he is impressed with their level and talent.

Jacobs holds a Confederation of African Football (CAF) coaching A-licence and a sports management diploma from Nelson Mandela University, and is a teacher by profession.
