Hardap Dam sluices opened

NamWater yesterday released water from the Hardap Dam after its level exceeded the safe limit of 70%.

The sluice gates of the Hardap Dam were opened yesterday morning after the dam level rose to more than 70%.

The level of the Hardap Dam stood at 71.5% by 11:00 yesterday morning, and NamWater announced that it would start releasing water at about 10:20 for a few hours. The rate of release is adjusted according to the rate of inflow into the dam.

After the flooding of Mariental in 2006, a cabinet decision was taken to keep the level of the dam below 70% to ensure the safety of the town's residents.

The Hardap Dam is the second one after the Naute Dam to reach it maximum level this season. The Naute sluice gates were opened after heavy rainfall in the South over the past few weeks.

According to the weekly dam bulletin issued by NamWater on Monday, a total of 296. 271 million cubic metres of water had flowed into the country's dams since the previous week.

The average level of the country's dams increased from 37.4% to 54.8%. Last season the average level stood at 20.8%.



South gets plenty

The majority of this inflow was recorded in the South, where 260.305 million cubic metres of water was recorded. This raised the level of southern dams from 36.7% the previous week to 56.9%. Last season the average level of the dams in the South was 22.8%.

The Neckartal Dam was 47.9% full on Monday after receiving an inflow of 166 190 million cubic metres. The level of the dam was 28.5% last week.

On Monday the level of the Hardap Dam stood at 68% compared to a week ago when it was 42% full. It received an inflow of 76.7 million cubic metres. Last season the dam was only 6.6% full.

The Naute Dam's level on Monday stood at 104% in comparison to last week when it was at 90.5%. It has received an in inflow of 11. 323 million cubic metres in the past week. Last season it was 77.9% full.

The Dreihuk Dam recorded an inflow of 5.669 million cubic metres. This raised the level from 5.7% to 42.3%. Last season the dam was empty. The level of the Bondels Dam rose from 3.9% to 42% after it received an inflow of 0.420 million cubic metres. Last season the dam was empty.



Central area

The dams in central Namibia recorded a total inflow of 8.025 million cubic metres. This raised the average dam level from 56.8% to 61.4%. Last season the average level was 48.3%.

The Swakoppoort Dam is now 71.5% full, the Von Bach Dam 77.9%, the Omatako Dam 29.5%, the Friedenau Dam 41.15 and the Goreangab Dam 102.2%.
