Gome’s side to play Champions League

The Armenian championship is over. The champions are Namibian international Wangu Gome’s Alashkert, who won the right to represent that country in the Champions League.
An annual club football competition organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and contested by top-division European clubs, the Champions League decides the competition winners through a round robin group stage to qualify for a double-legged knockout format and a single leg final.
It is one of the most prestigious football tournaments in the world and the most prestigious club competition in European football, played by the national league champions and, for some nations, one or more runners-up of their national associations.
In its present format, the league begins in late June with a preliminary round.

The 28-year-old Gome’s side qualified after beating Aararat-Armenia 1-0 on Friday, ending the season with 43 points.
The player said winning the cup was their aim from the start.
“It was our target from the beginning of the season to win the cup and the league by God’s grace. But unfortunately, we lost at the cup final and took the second place and when that happened, we decided to shift focus back to the league.
“We had three games to go, which were must-wins, and we managed to collect all nine points as a team. The last game was very important because the team we played against was fighting for a European championship spot but we were hungrier and didn't want to lose any points because our opponents were also looking for a win and hoping that we lost for them to win the league,” he said.
“It means a lot for me because we are champions and it gives me an opportunity to play against other teams who are also fighting for a spot to reach the UEFA Champions’ League group stage. I'm blessed and honoured to be given such an opportunity,” Gome added.
