Gome's future uncertain
The future for many players at Cape Umoya United, former known as Platinum Stars, looks bleak, with several changes occurring at the relegated PSL side.
Cape Umoya United and Brave Warriors midfielder Wangu Gome is still to decide on his future at the club.
Gome joined the former Premier Soccer League (PSL) outfit from Bidvest Wits on a season contract, with an option to extend, at the beginning of this year, after his contract with his former club ended. Sources close to the player have, however, suggested that Gome has been reluctant to extend his stay at the club, and that he is willing to weigh up other options.
It is believed Gome's indecision is being spurred on by the fact that the club was relegated at the end of the 2017/18 season, and there seems to be chaos within the management of the team. Namibian Sun understands the decision to relocate the team from Rustenburg to Cape Town and renaming it Cape Umoya United has allegedly brought unhappiness into the club. “I am struggling to decide at the moment what to do because I have an option to remain here for another two years. “I will, however, welcome any other offers that come around because it is always good to play premier league football.
“At the moment, I will try my best to remain calm and hopeful that things can turn out for the better,” Gome said. Gome joined Wits in the 2015/16 season, but was underutilised by the club during his spell with the South African giants.
He got his first taste of cup success in South Africa when Bidvest Wits powered to an emphatic 3-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 final. Wits, however, released the player at the end of last season after an injury-prone campaign.
There have been reports that the Gome's current club is on the verge of breaking down.
Platinum Stars were the Telkom Knockout winners in 2006 and 2013‚ and also collected the MTN8 title five years ago. There were also two runners-up finishes in the Absa Premiership. They also represented South Africa in CAF club competition‚ famously defeating Egyptian giants Al Ahly in 2008 when no other PSL side could match the North Africans.
“The fans and the media will be first to know when I have come to a decision as to what my next move will be,” Gome said.
