Namibia's midfielder Wangu Gome has extended his contract at Cape Umoya United, formerly known as Platinum Stars, with one year.

Gome joined the former Premier Soccer League (PSL) outfit from Bidvest Wits on a season contract, with an option to extend, at the beginning of this year, after his contract with his former club ended.

It was reported at the beginning of this month that the player was uncertain about his future, because the club was relegated at the end of the 2017/18 season, and there seemed to be chaos within the management of the team.

“Well I have decided to sign a one-year contract with the club after returning to South Africa from my holiday break.

“I am happy that I have made up my mind up and I am willing to help the club prosper.

“It was not an easy decision, but I hope that it will be worth it, given the work that needs to be done to revive this football team,” Gome said.

Gome entered the PSL following his heroic performances at the 2015 Cosafa Cup, which saw Namibia winning the tournament for the first time.

He was voted player of the tournament.

He attracted the attentions Bidvest Wits and joined them in the 2015/16 season, but was underutilised by the club during his spell with the South African giants.

He got his first taste of cup success in South Africa when Bidvest Wits powered to an emphatic 3-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 final.

Wits, however, released the player at the end of last season after an injury-prone campaign.

Platinum Stars migrated from Rustenburg to Cape Town and renamed itself Cape Umoya United after the end of the 2017/18 premier league season.

Platinum Stars were the Telkom Knockout winners in 2006 and 2013‚ and also collected the MTN8 title five years ago. They also had two runner-up finishes in the Absa premiership.

They also represented South Africa in CAF club competition‚ famously defeating Egyptian giants Al Ahly in 2008, when no other PSL side could match the North Africans.
