Namibian box-to-box midfielder Wangu Gome's club Alashkert has secured a Europa League spot for next season after finishing third overall with 31 points in the Armenian Premier League.

The 27-year-old Wangu, who is known for his diminutive size and midfield capabilities, signed with Alashkert, a football club based in the capital Yerevan, in March this year and will soon tread where not many other Namibian player have done before. This opportunity is appreciated by the Namibian, who said that it was hard watching others on the field at a time when he was recovering from a niggling knee injury which kept him out of many competitions.

Since joining the Armenian club he has played 11 matches, excluding a friendly in the second round.

“I'm happy playing for Alashkert. I have been getting game time and would love to keep it that way. We will take it one game at a time and give our all during the Europa League,” Gome said.

He added that he is always ready for a callup to the national squad as it's always an honour to represent the country.

Europa can open doors

The Europa League is an annual football club competition organised by UEFA since 1971 for eligible European football clubs. Clubs qualify for the competition based on their performance in their national leagues and cup competitions. It is the second-tier competition of European club football, ranking below the Uefa Champions League.

Down memory lane

Wangu has played for local club Civics. Following his performance at the 2015 Cosafa Cup, thus scooping the Best Player of the Tournament with the national team the Brave Warriors, Bidvest Wits signed the young midfielder on a one-season loan. He made his league debut for Wits in a 0-1 victory over University of Pretoria. Originally on loan, the club decided to extend his contract to long-term in 2016.

He then also played for another South African outfit, Platinum Stars, and Cape Umoya United before joining Alashkert this year.
