Glitzy Sport Awards on the cards
Annual ceremony set to draw Namibia’s top personalities
This year’s Sport Awards will be a glamorous affair as the Namibian Sport Commission (NSC) has gone to great lengths to ensure a world-class event will take place at the Windhoek Country Club on 28 October.
This was the overwhelming message when the event was launched in Windhoek yesterday morning.
According to Lorraine Kondombolo, who was the master of ceremonies, the Sport Awards have adopted the theme ‘Thriving in the Namib’ in recognition of the !Nara
plant.
“The !Nara plant is an indigenous Namibian plant, which thrives in difficult terrain… just like the !Nara shrub’s resilience enables it to thrive, so too does the Namibian sector continue to grow under difficult hardships,” she explained.
Namibian Sport Commission (NSC) acting chief administrator Walter Haseb said the event is perfect to unite the various sport personalities.
“This will be a high-profile event and it will be the perfect opportunity to come together and share ideas as sport people,” he said.
Categories
This year’s event will have 23 categories with the Sport Achiever set to walk away with N$200 000.
The Sportsman/Woman of the Year as well as the Disability Sportswoman/Man will each receive N$100 000.
NSC marketing manager Chalo Chainda explained that the organising team is hard at work finalising the details of the event.
“We want to bring in a lot of aspects to it and we’ll have local artists doing some of the choreography,” he said.
There will be a red carpet and the guests will be treated to a VIP experience.
Judges
The judging panel is headed by Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) presenter Lesley Tjiueza, veteran New Era journalist Carlos Kambaekwa, Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) secretary-general Joan Smit, Standard Bank’s Isdor Angula, Reginald Hinda, who is studying sports nanagement, lawyer Appolus Shimakeleni and former NBC sport television commentator Sebastian Kamungu.
Tjiueza urged sport federations to submit their nominations as soon as possible.
“We can only go through what we have been given and we cannot be judges, referees and players as well. Therefore the onus is on the federations to make sure that the athletes that have excelled under their sport code are nominated,” he stated.
Sponsorship
This year’s Sport Awards is supported by MTC with NamPower as the co-sponsor.
“The MTC brand is synonymous with sport development and we believe in supporting local because we would not have reached the heights we have been able to without the support of the Namibian nation,” said MTC executive John Ekongo.
MTC has made N$650 000 available as sponsorship while NamPower has provided N$500 000.
“Our investment is a genuine commitment towards achieving sporting excellence in Namibia,” said NamPower executive Gladwin Groenewaldt.
Among the other sponsors are Namibian Breweries who - through their Tafel Lager brand - will fund the prize money for the Team of the Year.
Coca-Cola has committed to sponsoring the Coach and Referee of the Year awards.
Tickets for the glamorous event are selling at N$500 per person while companies can show their support by buying a table for N$15 000.
