The ninth edition of the Cosafa Women’s Championship will kick off today and will run until 9 October in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa.
The Namibians will take on Uganda in their first Group C clash on Thursday at 12:00.
Woody Jacobs, the coach of the Gladiators, said he strongly believes the team has the quality to do well in the tournament.
“Our team has quality players that I believe can steal the show and highlight themselves to women football in the region and the tournament. I’m sure they will come through for the country.”
But before Jacobs and his side take to the field, the first match will take place today at 12:00, with Angola going up against Mozambique in Group A.
South Africa, also in Group A, will then face Malawi in the second match of the day at 15:30.
Group B will get under way on Wednesday when Botswana takes on East African guest nation South Sudan at 12:00.
The game will be followed later in the day by a battle between another guest nation, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe at 15:30.
On Thursday in Group C, 2019 finalists Zambia will take on Eswatini. The match will start at 15:30.
The best runners-up between the three groups will join the pool winners in the semi-finals, meaning there is little margin for error.
South Africa won the first three editions of the regional showpiece competition in 2002, 2006 and 2008, before Zimbabwe claimed victory on home soil in 2011.
The tournament had a brief hiatus until it was re-started in 2017 and has been played annually since, with South Africa victorious on each occasion.
All matches will be streamed live on www.cosafa.tv and available on SuperSport, with selected games to be shown on SABC.
Namibia’s squad consist of: Goalkeepers: Agnes Kauzuu, Melissa Matheus, Sussana Eises.
Defenders: Selma Enkali, Emma Naris, Iina Katuta, Lovisa Mulunga, Lydiana Nanamus, Veronica Van Wyk, Nicole Philander, Kamunikire Tjituka.
Midfielders: Annouschka Kordom, Milicent Hikuam, Memory Ngonda, Shanice Diaries, Asteria Angula, Tuelikondjela Amukoto.
Forwards: Stella Williams, Kylie Van Wyk, Anna-Marie Shikusho, Beverly Ueziua, Thomalina Adams, Juliana Blou, Fiola Vliete, Gaironeeza Maclobo.
