The senior national women’s football team, the Brave Gladiators, are still without a coach even though they are scheduled to compete in the Cosafa Women’s Championship from 15 to 26 September.

The women’s side does not have a coach, despite the fact that Bobby Samaria was named as the interim head coach of the Brave Warriors at an executive committee meeting held from 13 to 14 August in Windhoek.

Cosmos said shortlisted coaches had been interviewed and a new sheriff for the women’s side will be announced soon, but he did not say when.

The senior women’s team was previously led by Mammie Kasaona, who was assisted by Robert Naoseb.

Women empowered to lead

Cosafa says a woman should be in charge for the women’s championship.

That is one of Cosafa’s terms, in order to empower and develop the women’s game and to encourage women to take up coaching positions.

Cosmos added that Kasaona had applied to lead the junior teams, but might also be considered to take charge of the senior side.

In addition, Cosmos told Namibian Sun that they were struggling with finances when asked if they would assist Tura Magic with participation fees for the Caf Women’s Championship qualifiers.

Tura Magic Ladies will battle it out against Zambia’s Green Buffaloes and Zimbabwe’s Black Rhino Queens in the inaugural competition, which will be played from 26 August to 4 September.

He explained that the football association wants to assist the women’s game, but they are inundated with many issues and funding is scarce.

Cosmos said they had received US$ 500 000 from Fifa as Covid relief, but that money is for administrative matters and as much as they stretch it, it cannot cover all costs the football association faces.

“Nothing additional is coming in. We want to assist but the NFA also isn’t obligated to give money to clubs. In the history of the NFA this has never been done.

“But because we want to help the women, we are working around the clock to help. Registration for the women in the competition cost about N$145 000, flights are around N$300 000.

“And then I hear as well that the attire for the team is not proper, what then do we do? The issues are just endless,” Cosmos said.
