Geingonomics: Brickbats and bouquets of regime failure
ANDREAS SILUME SHEYA
From the onset, ever prior the commencement of the Geingob administration, he received praises as if it was a beginning of a new era, turning a blind eye on the fact that incoming President Hage Geingob has been in government even longer than our lifetimes thus no significant difference would be expected.
Hage Geingob ascended to the presidency by an impressive 80% toll in the national elections, the adage “from whom much is given, much is expected’’, we go down memory to highlight what we have gotten so far from the Geingob administration.
‘High sounding Harambee plan launched’, these where the headlines of the Namibia newspaper on 6 April 2016 when the Geingob regime introduced its plan of action, it actually started on a good note, with consultative nationwide town-hall meetings and a robust reflection of Geingob’s 100 days in office, No Namibian president has done this before and a leader is only good as much as how they engage with the citizenry and here, Geingob sets precedence.
Poverty eradication emerged as a national priority, led to the establishment of the poverty eradication ministry which spearheaded the food bank, poverty is a multifaceted aspect hence tunnel vision never addresses the root causes, few years down the line, the food bank initiative is trimmed with the merging of the gender and poverty ministries.
Not taking away the significance of it in addressing hunger, recently 1.6 million Namibians are reported to languish in poverty.
Despite the shortcomings, the Geingob regime deserves some credit in how the outbreak of the Corona virus pandemic was mitigated and the deployment of law enforcement to ensure adherence to health regulations imposed is indeed commendable. This was one of the challenges for the top-heavy cabinet to prove that there is flesh blood in the executive, that was indeed a year of resilience in turbulent times of pandemic shake-off.
SWAPO’s organized chaos has shown how the gerontocrats are losing the grip of authority, them having deliberately sorted themselves out by enacting restrictions for one to take up senior positions in the party of which only most of them are eligible leaving out the majority of the youth.
No wonder there are looming functionaries in the youth leadership with the ejection of the Kunene governor, more is yet to be seen. This is another minus one for the Geingob regime.
Increased crime in all forms, specifically the plethora of domestic gender-based violence has shocked the nation, a nationwide protest emerged under the banner #ShititAllDownNamibia, this was another test to the leadership and shown that the current regime cannot withstand so much pressure even when presented with concrete resolutions to build on, Namibia Youth .1- 0 Geingob regime.
Swapo’s Fishrot poised chalice has revealed systemic and systematic corruption, speaking of this gives President Geingob cold feet, it's a nightmare throughout his presidency, it seems that he came onboard with merchants of corruption in his leadership.
Economic inclusion is key to the future of Namibia, as Gaomab opines that Geingonomics offers the basis of economic inclusion to get youth, women, men, old, differently abled and disposed to partake into economy, to date the zigzagging on the New Economic Empowerment Framework goes on if not swept under the carpet.
Gaomab’s view of the SOE reforms as key players and contributors to national productivity calls for reform and proper corporate governance to the SOEs, however to date most enterprises remains in shambles marred by gross malpractices and political fingering, as we pay tribute to our late national airline, checkmate!
The ‘Geingonomics’ raises the bar of the political and economic expectations that necessitate the commencement of hard work, efficient planning and execution, as Nghidipo Nangolo elucidates. However, one’s efforts should be equal to ambition but with the status quo at this juncture could condemn the ‘Geingonomics’ to the dustbin of history.
With just a few years to bid farewell to the Geingob administration, the coining of “Geingonomics” as an economic inclusion strategy by NACC CEO Mihe Gaomab II was a lazy eye vision of an eagle.
